Afternoon Adventure | Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo

This weekend was spent celebrating the second year of my son’s life. Words can’t express how bittersweet this parenting thing is. I feel like I just brought him home yesterday, but then I look back on photographs of him as a newborn, sob uncontrollably, and then look up to see how much he’s grown.

My son is my best friend. No, that doesn’t mean that he gets whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He is my best friend because we spend every single day together. We play and go to movies. He helps me cook in the kitchen, and clean up when we’re done. We sing together in the car, and when we watch our favorite movies on repeat. We go on hikes, and we explore. Despite all of the tantrums, tears, and adjustments that go into the world of a two year old, he is my favorite person to spend my time with, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Yesterday, in honor of free-spirited, outdoor-loving self, we went for an afternoon adventure after his birthday party and we had so much fun.

Ellis, if you’re reading this someday in the future, I hope that you know how proud of you I am. Your determination to learn, and to see the world in a new way is inspiring beyond measure. I hope you always find comfort in nature, and find ways to call it home, no matter where you are. Watching you grow has been my greatest adventure by far, and I’m so proud of you. I love you, buddy.
